Foundation Overview

The California Scottish Rite Foundation (CSRF) oversees the charitable activities of 14 RiteCare Childhood Language Centers in the state, several scholarship programs, and an Americanism program focused on Veteran Affairs. Historically, funding has come primarily from members of the Masonic fraternity. Looking ahead, CSRF intends to expand the donor base by reaching out to the families who have benefitted from the free language center services, scholarship recipients and others in the communities we serve. To implement this program, the California Scottish Rite Foundation seeks an experienced, front-line major gift fundraiser to work with the board members of the Foundation as well as the various RiteCare Childhood Language Center Boards.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Executive Vice President of the California Scottish Rite Foundation, the Major Gift Officer will liaise with the Foundation Board of Directors and the Boards of the individual RiteCare Centers to identify a pool of major gift prospects across the State. Relationships will be developed through personal visits and communications and will focus on donor interests and CSRF Foundation’s priorities. RiteCare Center and Foundation Board members will be involved as appropriate.

Essential Functions

The Major Gifts Officer will travel at least 30% of the year throughout the state. Focus will be on individual donors. The Major Gifts Officer may also be involved in soliciting philanthropic support from corporate sponsors and foundations.

Primary responsibilities will include:

  • Working one-on-one with board members to introduce new prospects to CSRF through prospect research;
  • Facilitating and managing the moves of Board Members as it relates to the major gift pipeline;
  • Writing talking points for Board Member meetings, including donor solicitation and cultivation meetings;
  • Assisting in identifying new CSRF board members.
  • Developing and monitoring consistent mechanisms for reporting Major Gift Program results, producing reports for senior leadership and benchmarking both internally and externally.
  • Creating and implementing an ongoing donor relations program that will increase donor retention.
  • Develop a strategic plan for each donor, including identifying appropriate project information and budgets, and ensure preparation of materials and proposals as well as written documentation for accurate gift recording and reporting.
  • Identify and qualify new major and planned gift donors through research, board member collaborations, and thoughtful engagement.
  • Identify and ensure thorough and accurate recording of reports on all visits and other prospect activities.
  • Participate in events and effectively engage prospects in intentional ways.
  • Create monthly reports that accurately reflect portfolio activity and performance.
  • Helps manage internal tracking systems, which monitor solicitation progress, donor acknowledgement, and income projections.
  • Ensures that all printed materials are well-written and proofed including but not limited to letters, proposals, invites, mailing lists, reports.
  • Exhibits appropriate phone, email and in-person etiquette, and responds to phone and email messages in a timely fashion.

Ideal Qualifications/Experience:

  • Excitement about the mission of CSRF. Ability to succinctly articulate the CSRF mission and the case for support in a clear and compelling manner.
  • Self-motivated strategic thinker with a proven record working independently and achieving results.
  • Successful experience working with high-level board members and institutional leaders.
  • Ability to garner trust and confidence of senior staff, including program leaders, board members and donors.
  • Polished professional presentation, excellent interpersonal skills, and strong organization and communication skills.
  • Strong follow-through and attention to detail; proven ability to set and meet deadlines.
  • Work effectively under pressure with competing priorities.
  • Experience in articulating an organization’s mission and programs and project information and tailoring to interest of donors.
  • Must be comfortable with a flexible work schedule, including travel for major donor cultivation, opening nights for performances and some evening and weekend work as needed.
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of five to seven (5-7) years of development/fundraising experience, with proven track record soliciting and closing gifts in the expected range from individuals.
