General Giving Guidelines
What is the California Scottish Rite's Foundation and how does it relate to Scottish Rite California?
The California Scottish Rite Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation separate from Scottish Rite California. It was incorporated as a California non profit Corporation on June 16, 1958 and is dedicated to support and assist the children in California to develop their full potential by providing childhood language services, scholarships and other general charitable and educational programs.
Is California Scottish Rite Foundation considered non-profit?
Yes. California Scottish Rite Foundation is a privately supported, not-for-profit organization. It has been independent since its founding in 1958 and was recognized by the Internal Revenue Service in November 1960 as a 501(c)(3) public charity.
What is a fund and how do I start one?
The California Scottish Rite Foundation funds support Childhood Language Centers throughout California and provide scholarships to deserving students in undergraduate and graduate work. A donor may temporarily or permanently (endow) restrict his/her support for a specific area. ONLY the donor may restrict the use of his or her donation. A minimum donation of $25,000 is needed to establish a Foundation Fund. Please call (562) 435-6061 for more information on establishing funds. Our Foundation Secretary would be happy to meet with you to discuss your desire to establish a fund.
What is endowment and why is it important?
A financial endowment is a transfer of money or property donated to an institution, usually with the stipulation that it be invested, and the principal remain intact in perpetuity or for a defined time period. This allows for the donation to have a much greater impact over a long period of time than if it were spent all at once.
Permanent endowment allows the California Scottish Rite Foundation to plan confidently for the future. Endowment seeds new programs not typically funded through donations, provides support for new ventures in established programs and makes it possible to attract and retain the best and brightest employees.
My gift may be considered small in comparison to some other gifts you might receive. Would my gift still make a significant difference?
It takes gifts at all levels to help the Foundation. Every gift makes a significant difference in the lives of the children the Language Centers serve.
